Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for the Federal Skilled Trades Program, candidates must meet several essential requirements.

  • At least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the past five years
  • Meet the minimum score of Canadian Language Benchmark 5 for speaking and listening, and Canadian Language Benchmark 4 for reading and writing.
  • There is no education requirement for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. But you can get points for a completed educational credential if you have an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).
  • A valid job offer of full-time employment for at least one year, or a Certificate of Qualification in their skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial or territorial authority.
  • Meet the job requirements for that skilled trade as set out in the National Occupational Classification, except for needing a certificate of qualification.
Express Entry

Comprehensive Trade Skill List:

The Federal Skilled Trades Program operates based on a comprehensive list of eligible trade occupations. Candidates must have work experience in a skilled trade that is recognized by the Canadian government and aligns with the National Occupational Classification (NOC) Skill Level B. Skilled trades for the Federal Skilled Trades Program are organized under these groups of the National Occupational Classification (NOC):

  • Major Group 72, technical trades and transportation officers and controllers
  • excluding Sub-Major Group 726, transportation officers and controllers
  • Major Group 73, general trades
  • Major Group 82, supervisors in natural resources, agriculture and related production
  • Major Group 83, occupations in natural resources and related production
  • Major Group 92, processing, manufacturing and utilities supervisors, and utilities operators and controllers
  • Major Group 93, central control and process operators and aircraft assembly assemblers and inspectors, excluding Sub-Major Group 932, aircraft assemblers and aircraft assembly inspectors
  • Minor Group 6320, cooks, butchers, and bakers
  • Unit Group 62200, chefs

The work experience only counts after you are qualified to independently practice the occupation.

Language Proficiency:

Language proficiency is a critical factor in the FSTP. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in English or French by taking approved language tests such as IELTS for English or TEF for French. Meeting the required language scores is essential for eligibility in the FSTP. CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and 4 for reading and writing.

Financials:

You must show that you have enough money for you and your family to settle in Canada.

Express Entry Application:

Similar to other economic immigration programs, the Federal Skilled Trades Program operates within the Express Entry system. Candidates eligible for the FSTP create an online Express Entry profile and are ranked based on factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.

Permanent Residency Pathway:

The FSTP provides a direct pathway to Canadian Permanent Residency for skilled tradespeople. Successful candidates are invited to apply for permanent residency through regular Express Entry draws, allowing them to live and work in Canada indefinitely.

No Provincial Nomination Required:
