What is IELTS all about?

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is designed to measure the overall proficiency in English. It is a prerequisite for those who wish to study or work in a country where English is the language of communication. It conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. The test is simultaneously conducted by the IDP Australia and Cambridge ESOL.

IELTS Test Report (TRF) is valid for two years from the date of the written test.

  • IELTS skill evaluation:  Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking.
    Test Timing:  2 hours and 44 minutes

Listening Test Pattern:

  • 4 sections/ conversations
  • 40 questions
  • (Multiple choice, True/ False/Not Given, Fill in the blanks, paragraph heading, matching information, short answer questions, etc.)
  • 30 minutes (transcript)
  • 10 minutes for transferring answers

Listening tips:

  • Attempt all questions.
  • Watch out for plurals in answers.
  • Beware of making any errors when you transfer your answers.
  • Multiple choice answers will ask for a letter (a,b,c,d).

Reading

  • 3 passages
  • 40 questions
  • (Multiple choice, True/ False/Not Given, Fill in the blanks, paragraph heading,
  • matching information, short answer questions, etc.)
  • 60 minutes
  • no extra time for transferring answers

Reading tips

  • Do not bother reading the passages. It’s a waste of time.
  • Skimming and scamming will be your best friends.

The only focus is to find the answer. Undoubtedly it’s there in the passage.

Writing
  • Two writing tasks.
  • Task 1: Graph  Interpretation (20 minutes – 150 words )

  • Simple ideas explained using excellent English can get you a band score of 9
  • Practice a wide grammatical range that stands you out from the crowd.
